James M. Lisy, Professor of Chemistry, received his B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Chemical Physics in 1979.  He joined the University of Illinois in 1981.  Professor Lisy's current research interests are in the areas of molecular interactions pertaining to solution, biological, atmospheric, environmental and materials chemistry.  He is the author of over 80 scientific papers and book chapters.  Professor Lisy has received the Dreyfus Award for Young Faculty in Chemistry in 1981, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 1987, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship in 1996. He has been a visiting professor/scientist at the Max Planck Institut für Strömungsforschung in Göttingen, Germany in 1989, the Institute for Molecular Science in Okazaki, Japan in 1998 and Purdue University in 1998. He has also been a Chercheur associé at CNRS-Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France in 2004 and a Wilsmore Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia from 2004-5. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2001 and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006. He has been the recipient of the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award four times. Professor Lisy has held research grants from the National Science Foundation, the American Chemical Society - Petroleum Research Fund and NATO, among others.  He is currently a senior editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry and served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Chemical Physics. Professor Lisy has served on the Advisory Committee of the American Chemical Society - Petroleum Research Fund, the Executive Committee of the Beckman Scholars Program of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research review panel for Molecular Dynamics, and is a past Chair and Vice-Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Molecular and Ionic Clusters.  Within the School of Chemical Sciences, he has chaired the Service Facilities Committee and was the Associate Head of Chemistry from 2002-5.
Professor Lisy is an avid cyclist, and a member of local cycling clubs and teams in Champaign-Urbana. If you are visiting the area, bring your bike and plan to put in some miles.
